Ethics in the workplace
Ethics has been defined
many times, so there is no reason to repeat it’s definition. However,
addressing ethics in the workplace does bridge ethics and morals on some level.
Workplace is described as a place where a group of individuals gather together
to accomplish specific goals for a business or organization. It encompasses a
myriad of attitudes and characters, and cultures. It is important to establish
work ethics or people can get out of control and start to implement their own
code of ethics.
If ethics are not
established, productivity could be stopped. Without proper leadership in a
workplace, ethics could cause major problems. There are a list of things that
needs to be established in a workplace to ensure good ethics exist. Honesty is
the major factor for good ethics in a work environment. Honest should always
play a major role in any work place. It sets the tone for anyone who wants to
have longevity in a work place. Honesty also shows colleagues what the
standards are for that particular company and it should not be compromised.
Honesty should be effortless. Honesty isn’t something that should be crafted;
it should be a part of your fiber.
Respect should also be
a part of a workplace environment. If the people who work together don’t
respect the coworkers, it will be counterproductive. If there is no respect in
the workplace, disrespect could become the norm. The lack of respect shows
others that the leadership is not in control and will tolerate less than
stellar workers. Honesty and respect should be exemplified by everyone who
works for the organization, not just the leaders. Leaders, lead by example, and
to show their employers this is what is expected of them, gives everyone
guidance for the company.
Another importance
aspect of ethics in the workplace is to always display professionalism.
Professionalism is a characteristic that not everyone has, but can acquire.
Professionalism should let everyone around notice that you are of the highest
quality that the company has hired. It should allow others to see that you are
dedicated, accountable and honest you are. It should also let others see that
under no circumstances will you be late for anything for any reason because you
value yourself and want to represent yourself and your company at the highest
standards possible.
In the workplace,
setting boundaries is mandatory. It should be understood that certain practices,
such as racism and sexism will not be tolerated. It should always come across
that being fair is the most important things that you will display to all
personnel on all levels. Favoritism is not an object and everyone should walk
away feeling like they were treated as an equal in the work place.
When a code of ethics is set in the workplace, it allows
everyone there to be accountable for themselves and others. It shows that if
you are hired for a specific job, you must be qualified and there should be no
reason to feel threaten by anyone else because the ethics in the workplace is
applicable to everyone.
Great post Ms. White. It could just be a perfect world if everyone would follow the rules just the way you describe it in your blog but unfortunately we live in a world and a society in which is not about what you know but who you know. It doesn't matter if your in the military or in a Burger King we all know that one person who can get away with "murder". They arrive late to work, leave early, hangs out with the supervisor on the weekends, laughs at the bosses jokes, takes a 45min lunch break instead of 30. So how do we change this in the workplace when it affects you? Well if you can't beat them you might as well join them I say. Sometimes you cant change the impossible Ms. White..Thanks for your blog.
ReplyDeleteAgain excellent post. Mr. Ramirez, I am in agreement with you also. I have experienced similar effects of the ethics dilemma and it does make you come to your saying of "if you cannot beat them, you might as well join them" attitude. Well, how about "fake it til you make it" to add to the subject.
ReplyDeleteFor example, African American - Black male has been asked to assist his department/agency in placing an narcotics undercover van in an predominately African American/ - Black community.
Now, he has no affiliation to the unit, there are no African American - Black males who work in the unit. One day he is approached with this line, "Officer 'wanna-be detective' we need help in getting our undercover van in this particular area/neighborhood. If we move it, we will be noticed because we do not have an African-American - Black to help us. However, if you do it, they will not notice and the plan will be perfect. Also, it will look good for you when you apply to the detective bureau."
Ethical dilemmas or compromised work ethics will happen all over the world whether they are in place prior to your employment or told to on termination day. In either case, we as the employee will never know. As a community activist, we can say something is not right.
In law enforcement, judges are given decisions on how to pass on punishment to offenders of the law. Do you think ethics is a consideration? What do you think happened to the teacher in the state of Montana who raped the student and he got a sentence of thirty days in jail.
Now, I do agree with the ethics and moral philosophy but I the world that I live in has become so selfish, aggressive, barbaric towards one another, that to greed and all about "me" has become the norm.

Mary,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you as well. I've been in that type of situation where there is a four man crew. A chief or senior chief, a first class, then second class but we all on a first name basis. No its not right but when you are working and day in day out them the only people you see what should you do. My chief was having a party and I was the lowest ranking there and he called me by my name and I called him by his. No it wasn't right and where is the military bearing. In some jobs you just have to go with it. I don't think its a big deal but if you were looking out and not on the inside you would say there's no respect and leadership is out the window but actually its not. We were that tight family were he got my back and I had his back.
"Addressing ethics in the workplace” This very important and often over looked It's some key factors to this equation 1. The individual, 2.The tone of the work environment, 3. The consequences of employee misconduct. Hopefully the hiring staff are bring in people with clean back grounds, people of high standards with positive character traits. Having a place where the employees want to work and grow and developed new skills is important because it will keep a positive tone in the building. The imperative point is if the is a point where a employee crosses the line then action is taken or you will be released form the company.
ReplyDeleteMary: This is an excellent blog on ethics in the workplace. Professor Taylor
